Hi, readers! Now, I want to talk about Coast Guard Cutter Barque Eagle Arrives in Savannah. Please feel free to read and enjoy it!
This morning I woke up around 0630 and began listening to Marine VHF and Coast Guard frequencies to get an idea of when the USCGC Eagle would be arriving. Around 0700, Coast Guard Boats and USCG Auxiliary Boats were very active in preparation and I heard an arrival time of 0815 at the jetties passed. My father, Mac McCormick Jr. – AF4KL and I were planning on going on out to Cockspur Island and watching the Eagle come in. We saddled up and headed out to Cockspur Island getting there around 0800. Awhile later, the we could see the Eagle approaching the mouth of the river and turning upriver.
Prior to leaving for Cockspur Island, I heard the Cutter Yellowfin departing the Savannah Riverfront with 11 crew and 45 passengers on board en route to the Eagle on CG 127 (171.2375 P25) and CG 113 (163.1325 P25). On the way out to Cockspur Island, we could hear various Coast Guard and Auxiliary vessels talking to the Eagle on Marine VHF Ch. 21 (157.050). Not long after we arrived at Cockspur Island, we began to hear the Yellowfin and the 41′ Coast Guard boats 41428 and 41354 coordinate passenger transfers to the Eagle on CG 113 (163.1325 P25); the Yellowfin positioned itself behind the Eagle while 41428 and 41354 shuttled the passengers from the Yellowfin to the Eagle, which had dropped her accommodation ladder for the evolution. It was fun to watch it take place through the binoculars, but viewing was definitely enhanced by being able to listen in as it happened. Making it even more interesting was being able to listen in on the Eagle’s deck operations; a friend in Florida passed along 450.325 for Cutter Eagle’s operations. It was very active and provided for great listening as the Eagle moved upriver. As the Eagle passed by Station Tybee, Coast Guard helicopter 6565 (MH-65C, Air Station Savannah) arrived overhead, presumably to take photos and/or video.
More photos can be seen in a Flickr gallery I uploaded this morning.
Here is a full list of the frequencies we monitored this morning while watching the Cutter Eagle’s arrival. Being able to listen to what is going definitely enhances the enjoyment of watching things that you don’t get to see very often and the arrival of “America’s Tall Ship” certainly fits that description.
